2020 Colorado Trip

Covid put a kink in our plans to go on the fishing trip again in 2020. It was a crazy year and we found ourselves wanting to get away even if we couldn’t go on that trip. Away from the craziness, away from the heat, we just wanted a break. So, David and I booked a trip to Estes Park and it was such a wonderful time! We road tripped up there, and just had a nice relaxing time there. We saw things, and kept a pretty chill and relaxed pace about everything so we were able to really rest and relax the entire time.

We found this small, cute hotel along the river and it was nothing crazy fancy, but we loved that we could walk right outside our room to the river and enjoy a glass of wine or cup of coffee and take in the view. The first afternoon we were there, I had taken a shower after driving all night, and after I decided to go relax outside while David took a nap. The first thing I saw when I got outside were Elk enjoying the grass and weather too! It was so crazy to me how relaxed these ELK are around people (obviously keep your distance), but there are so many of them that they walk through town, the roads, etc. The second morning we were there, a mama Elk and her baby held up traffic on the main street in town while they took their time walking down the street.

Rocky Mountain National Park is about 10-15 minutes away from Estes Park so we went a few times during our stay. There was an app that we were able to download onto my phone and plug it into the car. It was basically a self guided tour and I loved this. It was easy to hear what was being said and to go at our own pace.

Like I said, we tired to keep this trip low key and a relaxed pace, so we didn’t really have much pre-planned for this trip except “Let’s go to Estes Park.” Our hotel had some great info packets and we ended up booking two “excursion/touristy” type adventures to do. The first was a morning guide that was photography based. David was a total champ for this and got up super early in the morning with me so we could get to the guide station on time and get into the park before sunrise. Our guide was phenomenal. We were the only ones booked that morning so we basically got to do whatever we wanted. I requested a waterfall and wildlife. We hit the waterfall first, and then our guide took us to a not-very known about area where we saw so many elk. We were there during rut season so we go to see the males fighting, and we were close. It was really an amazing memory and a once in a lifetime experience I think.

The second thing we booked was fly fishing! Neither David or I had ever done fly fishing before so this was a first for us, but boy did we love it! One of the thing Is love about Colorado is how beautiful it is, there are streams and rivers running alongside the roads near Estes and we literally just drove to the stream our guide took us to and parked alongside the road to go fly fishing in the river. It was a beautiful experience fishing in this river surrounded by mountains.

The Colorado scenery was just beautiful. David and I both never got tired of it. The mountains, rivers, cooler weather….we loved it all and both of us want to go back!
