Wednesday, November 5th
Wednesday, our plan was to explore the Hena Highway. It was talked up in my guidebook and there are supposed to be several waterfalls along this highway. Waterfalls? No need to tell me twice…I’m a sucker for waterfalls. We started early this morning since we had to drive to the other side of the island (a good hour and a half-two hour drive) in addition to the drive along the Henna Highway. Thank goodness my guidebook told us to start with a full tank of gas, because once we were on this road, there were no gas stations to fill up along the way. This drive was different from our previous day of exploring because it was much more tropical and less beach/oceanfront views. There was some of that, but most of it was trees and greenery. Straight up, we felt like we were driving through some scenes from Jurassic Park.

About an hour into our drive after getting to the main part of Hena Highway, we came across some beautiful waterfalls. We had spotted some waterfalls before, but these three were probably the best of the entire day. We stopped, I took some photos from the bridge, and then we decided to hike down there. The hike wasn’t bad at all, just lots of rock and it was wet and slippery from that morning’s rain and I assume the waterfall itself. But it was totally worth it. These are the Waikani Falls (aka the Three Bears).

After even more driving through Hena Highway, David was starting to get hungry. Well, maybe a little hangry if you get my drift. We had breakfast that morning, but that was around 6:30am, and by 1:30pm and a morning of in the sun and hiking up and down places for photos and to see waterfalls, etc. you can get pretty hungry. We had brough some water and a few snacks, but he needed a meal. We honestly had no idea how long the Hena Highway really was (at least to drive through). There are a lot of windy curves and you pretty much drive the whole thing at 10-15mph because of the turns, curves and looking at the scenery. Add that to stopping every now and then for your wife to take photos because the shot is just “so gorgeous” it can take awhile to get through this. We drove a little further and eventually I looked up exactly how far it was to the other side (Keep in mind, the Hena Road is basically a highway that goes in and around the mountain side on the east island. You have to go around as there’s no going straight through the mountain…and there’s only one road). We thought we had to be close to finishing it…turns out we weren’t even halfway (although we were probably another forty minutes to the halfway point). We decided to just turn around and head back, as David really needed some food in his stomach and I needed to use the ladies room for about the last hour and a half. haha. Two hours later we were out of there and getting some food. Another hour back to the hotel and we were ready for a shower (our hiking got me kinda dirty as I may have slipped once trying to get “the shot” and slide down a small hill of mud) and some food.
After our shower, we went to a camera store near our hotel to pick up a camera. David started researching the day before about some underwater cameras and found a place nearby that we could rent one. He really wanted to use it for snorkeling, and as we were going to a new place the next day to snorkel (one that is supposed to be great) we wanted the camera for that. We picked up the camera, grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed to bed for some sleep.
