Hawaii: Day 3

Tuesday, November 4th

Tuesday was our first day with a plan…sorta.  haha!  We tried to play everything by ear and not pack our schedule so full that our honeymoon felt more like a chore than a relaxing vacation, but we also wanted to make sure we actually did stuff and explored instead of just hang out by the pool and beach everytday.

First on our agenda, was the Nakalele Blowhole.  This was about an hour drive from our hotel, but the drive was absolutely gorgeous.  Winding roads through the mountain cliffs, ocean views and beauty in every direction you look. There were several pull offs along this road that we took advantage of for me to get some photos.  It was breathtaking.

When we made it to our destination, even though the book said the blowhole was below, I wasn’t expecting it to be so far below us.  If you know anything about me, you know I’ll do pretty much anything for a photo…haha.  So we hiked down this mountain (there was a small number of people who did this as well, but most looked from the cliff 250 feet above).  It took maybe 20-30 minutes to get down the mountain and I’m so glad we went.  We had to be careful to not get too close to the blowhole because it can actually be quite dangerous and suck you under if you are too close.  Here are a few photos.

Saw this heart carved in a rock and had to take a photo.

And a good ol’ selfie with the both of us:

Then we climbed back up the moutain.  I didn’t think about the whole “we have to climb back up” aspect of it when we were going down. haha.  Oh well, at least we got our workout for the day in.

After that we started to make the drive back, stopping along the way a few times.  I even found a local who hand carves wooden turtles (among other things) and picked one out for myself as a keep sake and to add to my collection (if I can call it that yet?).  I have a previous wooden turtle from my trip to the Bahamas.  We returned home that afternoon, grabbed some lunch and took a quick nap.  Then went out for dinner, and after went back up that windy road towards the blowhole (although we didn’t go that far) to watch the sunset.

I’m not sure I have mentioned this, but David and I rented a jeep.  Everything we read said to rent a convertible or jeep, and we went back and forth on if we wanted to spend the extra money, but in the end decided to.  We are SO glad we did. We loved the jeep, and it was wonderful cruising those views with the top down and watching the sun set over the ocean.
