Hawaii: Day 1

Sunday, November 2, 2014

Sunday was a day of travel.  We got up early Sunday morning (early to us at least) and left our home around 7am to head to the airport.  Our flight was around 9am.

We flew United directly into Honolulu.  The flight wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.  Thanks to technology, David and I both had our ipads with entertainment loaded onto it (aka: episodes of Nikita that we are currently watching), as well as books for me to read on my kindle app.  Add in some random sleeping here and there and we were good to go.  I know everyone complains that the airlines are terrible theses days and charge fees for everything (they do), but I still managed to be surprised that for an 8 1/2 hour flight you had to pay for any food (meal or small snack), and the only thing you received was a free drink.  Call me crazy, but if I’m flying over eight hours I sort of expected a free meal.  Especially since we were flying during lunch time.  Anyway, we got suckered in an bought a meal.  We were so hungry and didn’t grab breakfast that morning while we were getting ready to leave.  We shouldn’t have bought the meal.  Worst $20 between the both of us that we’ve ever spent.  The food was terrible.  Next time, we will stop at the airport subway and bring sandwiches on with us.

Fast forward 8 1/2 hours and we finally arrived in Honolulu.  Because we had to switch airlines, we had to go to baggage, grab our bags, switch terminals and all that fun stuff.  We had about 4 hours to kill after all of that was done.  We opted to go with later flights to get the cheaper airfare into Maui.  These four hours felt longer then the 8 1/2 hour flight from Texas to Honolulu.  It might have had something to do with the fact that they seem to not use A/C here in Hawaii that much.  Their airports are not totally enclosed, so there’s a lot of outside to inside switching that goes on seamlessly.  So much so that birds flying around inside the airport seemed to be a very common thing.  It also could have been due to the fact that even though our flight was at 7pm Hawaii time, that was 11pm Texas time and we were tired.

We did however, get to see our first Hawaiian sunset.

We finally boarded our flight and touched ground in Maui no more than 40 minutes later.  Kind of silly to think we had to wait 4 1/2 hours for a 40 minute flight.  Oh well.   After grabbing our bags in Maui, we went to the car rental place, grabbed our vehicle and made our 1 hour drive in the dark to our final destination:  The Hyatt Regency at Kaanapali.  Sadly, it was dark, so we couldn’t enjoy the drive to the hotel (we had a pretty good feeling that there was mountains on one side of our jeep and ocean on the other) except for the lit tiki torches that lined the driveway up to our hotel entrance.  That part was pretty cool. We checked into our hotel (got a free upgraded room when we casually mentioned it was our honeymoon, got authentic Hawaiian leis and went to our room.  By this time, it was 11pm Hawaii time and 3am Texas time.  We were exhausted and decided to explore the next day….you know….when there’s sunlight so you can actually see what’s around you.  I forgot to mention, that we did have to go past the outdoor pool area (remember how I said things here go inside to outside almost as if it’s all one room with no doors separating them?) to our room, and as we passed the outside portion, everything was all lit up by tiki torches.  It was pretty neat and made us excited to see everything the next day.
